The 2015 Château Roumieu (375ml) is a beautifully mature Sauternes from one of the appellation’s long-established family estates. Located in the commune of Barsac, Château Roumieu benefits from the misty autumn conditions that encourage the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), concentrating the grapes and creating the rich, complex style for which Sauternes is famous. The excellent 2015 vintage produced wines of outstanding richness, balance and ageing potential, making this an especially attractive release.
The nose is intensely aromatic, offering apricot, peach and candied orange peel alongside notes of acacia honey, marmalade, saffron and vanilla. Rich and luscious on the palate, it delivers layers of tropical fruit, baked citrus and honeyed complexity, balanced by vibrant acidity that keeps the wine fresh and focused. After nearly a decade in bottle, subtle notes of toasted nuts, caramel and spice are beginning to emerge, adding further depth and sophistication.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A classic mature Sauternes that offers exceptional value and a wonderful introduction to the style. Rich, decadent and beautifully balanced, it pairs superbly with foie gras, blue cheese, tarte tatin, crème brûlée, poached stone fruits and citrus-based desserts. The 375ml format makes it perfect for sharing, and while drinking beautifully now, it will continue to develop additional complexity through 2035–2040.
