The 2003 Château Cheval Blanc is a Cabernet Franc-led blend from Saint-Émilion on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, comprising 56% Cabernet Franc and 44% Merlot. One of Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates, Cheval Blanc draws its distinctive character from a mosaic of clay, gravel and sandy soils, alongside its unusually important proportion of Cabernet Franc. The exceptionally hot, dry 2003 season presented considerable challenges, producing the estate’s earliest harvest in more than a century. The resulting wine offers a particularly individual interpretation of Cheval Blanc, combining ripe fruit and supple texture with the aromatic finesse that has long distinguished this historic property.
The 2003 has been described through its development as showing mulberry, blackberry and cherry, accompanied by forest floor, leather, flowers and spice. James Suckling awarded 96 Points while reviewing for Wine Spectator in 2006, praising its refined tannins and seductive fruit. In a later assessment, Robert Parker awarded 92 Points for The Wine Advocate in 2014, finding a complex, medium-bodied wine with unexpected freshness, while already considering it fully mature. These differing assessments underline the importance of viewing this as a mature, vintage-specific expression. Today, a well-stored bottle may offer more prominent earthy and savoury complexity, with condition increasingly shaping the experience.
Ben’s Recommendation:
What makes this bottle particularly interesting is the opportunity to experience Cheval Blanc with more than two decades of development. I would buy the 2003 for drinking now, with its provenance and storage history carrying particular importance. My preference would be to enjoy it now through approximately 2028, rather than plan further extended cellaring. Stand the bottle upright beforehand to settle any sediment, then open and taste before deciding how much air it needs. Decant gently if necessary and follow its development in a generous Bordeaux glass. It would pair beautifully with roast duck, lamb, veal or mushroom dishes, keeping sauces restrained enough to appreciate its mature detail. For someone drawn to the perfume and texture of aged Right Bank Bordeaux, this offers a fascinating encounter with a distinctive Cheval Blanc vintage.
