The 1989 Château Coutet is a mature sweet white from Barsac, Bordeaux, classified Premier Grand Cru Classé in the historic 1855 classification. Made from 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc, the nose has developed beautifully with candied peach, lemon tart and crème brûlée alongside honeyed nuts, cinnamon, rosewater and tropical fruit.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied and concentrated with luscious sweetness balanced by the lively acidity and mineral freshness characteristic of Château Coutet. Mature flavours of honey, citrus zest, nuts and baking spice create considerable complexity, leading to a long, fresh and layered finish.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is a great choice for collectors and mature Barsac drinkers who enjoy developed honeyed fruit, spice and nutty complexity balanced by refreshing acidity. At more than three decades old, bottle condition and storage history are particularly important, and well-cellared examples are ready to enjoy now. Ideal with foie gras, blue cheese, crème brûlée, almond tart or fruit-based desserts.
