The 2022 Coates The Pinot Noir is a refined Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir crafted by Duane Coates MW from hand-picked fruit grown in the cool-climate Kuitpo subregion. A blend of four Pinot Noir clones, the wine undergoes 25% whole-bunch fermentation, natural yeast fermentation and 11 months in French oak barriques (one-third new) before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. The bouquet is elegant and expressive, revealing aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry and cranberry, complemented by savoury notes, subtle spice and a gentle touch of toasty oak.
On the palate, it is light to medium-bodied with silky tannins and vibrant natural acidity. Layers of delicate forest berries are joined by hints of cinnamon, dried herbs, mocha and earthy complexity, creating a beautifully balanced wine with a long, refined finish. The restrained use of oak and whole-bunch fermentation enhances both structure and aromatic lift, allowing the purity of Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir to shine.
Ben's Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is an excellent choice for customers who appreciate elegant, cool-climate Pinot Noir with bright fruit, savoury complexity and a Burgundian-inspired style. Pair it with roast duck, grilled salmon, mushroom risotto or herb-roasted chicken. Enjoy it now after a short decant, or cellar for 5–8 years to allow its savoury notes and silky texture to develop further.
