TAPANAPPA

Tapanappa Wines is a highly regarded family-run winery in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia, founded by pioneering winemaker Brian Croser and continued by his family with a focus on crafting terroir-driven, site-expressive wines from some of the region’s most distinguished sites. The winery’s name comes from the Tapanappa geological formation — a 550-million-year-old bedrock beneath the Fleurieu Peninsula — and in the local Aboriginal language means “sticking to the path,” reflecting the estate’s philosophy of precision and purpose in both vineyard and winemaking practices.

Tapanappa’s core concept is centred around “Distinguished Sites” — vineyards selected and managed to express their unique terroirs. The original and most celebrated is the Tiers Vineyard in the Piccadilly Valley, planted with Chardonnay in 1979 and credited with helping pioneer cool-climate viticulture in the Adelaide Hills. Other key sites include Foggy Hill Vineyard on the Fleurieu Peninsula, known for quality Pinot Noir, and Whalebone Vineyard in Wrattonbully, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc on rich terra rossa soils — all contributing to a diverse and distinguished portfolio.

The winery produces a range of elegant wines that reflect these cool-climate and site-specific influences, from crisp, mineral-driven Chardonnays and expressive Pinot Noirs to richer reds from the Whalebone Vineyard. For example, Tapanappa’s Tiers Vineyard Chardonnay wines are celebrated for their clarity, precision and balanced acidity — traits that have helped define the Adelaide Hills style internationally.

Tapanappa’s Cellar Door & Winery sits at the foot of the Tiers Vineyard in Piccadilly, offering tastings of its classic range as well as back vintages, often paired with local food platters amid picturesque vineyard views. The experience reflects the winery’s emphasis on place, craftsmanship and hospitality, making it a highlight of the Adelaide Hills wine trail.

In essence, Tapanappa stands as a testament to generational winemaking passion, a deep connection to terroir, and a pursuit of excellence in cool-climate Australian wine.
