SCHLOSS LIESER
Schloss Lieser – Thomas Haag is one of the leading Riesling estates of Germany's Mosel, based in the village of Lieser on the Middle Mosel. Owned by Thomas and Ute Haag, the estate is dedicated entirely to Riesling and today farms approximately 29 hectares, including an extraordinary collection of steep slate vineyards across some of the Mosel's most celebrated villages. Schloss Lieser has been a member of the prestigious VDP since 1999.
Thomas Haag comes from one of the Mosel's great wine families. He is the son of Wilhelm Haag of Weingut Fritz Haag in Brauneberg, where Thomas worked alongside his father before establishing his own reputation at Schloss Lieser. When Thomas and Ute took responsibility for Schloss Lieser in the 1990s, the property required extensive rebuilding and had little established customer base. Over the following decades, they transformed it into one of the most highly regarded Riesling estates in Germany.
The philosophy at Schloss Lieser is centred on what Thomas describes as the authenticity and naturalness of Riesling. Rather than imposing a strong winemaking signature, the objective is to produce Riesling in its purest form and allow differences between individual vineyards to become clearly visible in the finished wines.
The estate's vineyards are dominated by steep south- and southwest-facing slopes, with inclines reaching around 80%. Weathered and soft Devonian slate soils form the geological foundation of many of these sites, creating the conditions associated with classic Mosel Riesling: aromatic intensity, fine acidity, mineral complexity and remarkable concentration without excessive alcohol.
At the heart of Schloss Lieser is Lieser Niederberg Helden, the estate's home vineyard and one of its defining terroirs. Yet Thomas Haag has progressively assembled an exceptional portfolio extending far beyond Lieser itself. The VDP currently lists holdings in prestigious sites including Brauneberger Juffer, Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr, Piesporter Goldtröpfchen, Graacher Himmelreich, Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Bernkasteler Doctor.
This vineyard collection places Schloss Lieser in an unusual position: one producer can interpret some of the most important Riesling terroirs across several of the Middle Mosel's greatest villages. Thomas himself highlights this diversity of classified vineyards as one of the estate's defining characteristics.
Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr is among the most famous of these sites. The VDP-classified portion covers 10.6 hectares, with extraordinarily steep slopes reaching approximately 70–85% and predominantly south-facing exposure. Riesling grown here is traditionally associated with finesse, mineral intensity and finely structured acidity.
Piesporter Goldtröpfchen provides another celebrated expression of Mosel Riesling, while Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Graacher Himmelreich extend the portfolio into the famous vineyards around Bernkastel and Graach. The estate has also secured access to the legendary Bernkasteler Doctor, one of the Mosel's historically most prestigious vineyard names.
The vineyards are worked as naturally as possible, and harvesting is particularly demanding. Grapes are picked and selected by hand in multiple passes, allowing the team to harvest different levels of ripeness and botrytis from the same vineyards. This meticulous selection is essential to the estate's ability to produce everything from dry Riesling through Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese to rarer concentrated sweet wines.
In the cellar, fermentation is deliberately restrained. Schloss Lieser Rieslings undergo spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, traditionally at cool temperatures in the estate's old vaulted cellar. The intention is not to manufacture a particular flavour profile but to preserve the individual identity of each vineyard.
The Schloss Lieser portfolio consequently demonstrates the remarkable stylistic range of Riesling. VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS bottlings represent the estate's dry interpretation of its finest classified sites, while the traditional Prädikat wines—Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese—combine natural sweetness with the acidity, low alcohol and mineral precision that have made the Mosel internationally famous. Recent VDP auction selections have included Niederberg Helden Kabinett, Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett, Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Spätlese and Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Lange Goldkapsel.
One of the most attractive qualities of Schloss Lieser is the combination of intensity and delicacy. The wines can possess substantial concentration and extraordinary ageing potential while remaining light on their feet, with finely structured acidity and relatively modest alcohol. This tension between power and weightlessness is one of the defining characteristics of great Mosel Riesling.
Thomas Haag's work has received major recognition within Germany. He was named Gault & Millau Winemaker of the Year in 2015, while the estate has subsequently achieved top-level ratings from several major German wine guides.
Despite this international reputation and its remarkable vineyard holdings, Schloss Lieser remains a small family-run estate. Thomas is still the cellarmaster, and Thomas and Ute Haag remain the owners. That combination of family control, meticulous vineyard work and access to some of Germany's greatest Riesling terroirs is fundamental to the identity of Schloss Lieser.
