RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY
Russian River Valley is one of California’s most celebrated cool-climate wine regions, located in the heart of Sonoma County. Influenced by fog rolling inland from the Pacific Ocean through the Petaluma Gap, the region enjoys a long growing season that allows grapes to ripen slowly while maintaining vibrant natural acidity.
The area is internationally renowned for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, two varieties that thrive in the valley’s moderate climate and diverse soils. Pinot Noir from Russian River Valley often shows flavours of ripe cherry, raspberry and plum layered with floral notes, spice and subtle earthiness. Chardonnay typically offers expressive aromas of citrus, apple and stone fruit, complemented by creamy texture and bright freshness.
The region’s sandy loam soils, known locally as Goldridge soil, are particularly well suited to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, helping produce wines with purity of fruit and refined structure. Russian River Valley also contains notable vineyard areas such as Green Valley, one of the coolest pockets of the appellation, known for especially elegant and aromatic wines.
Today, Russian River Valley stands as one of the benchmark regions for premium Californian Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, combining generous fruit character with balance, finesse and distinctive cool-climate expression.
