The 2023 Domaine Faiveley Meursault 1er Cru Charmes is a classic white Burgundy from one of Meursault’s most celebrated Premier Cru vineyards. Located on the southern side of the appellation near Puligny-Montrachet, Charmes is renowned for producing Chardonnay that combines richness, texture and generosity with underlying mineral tension and finesse. Domaine Faiveley, established in 1825, remains one of Burgundy’s most historic and respected producers.

The nose is elegant and layered, showing pear, white peach and lemon zest alongside toasted hazelnut, brioche and delicate floral notes. The 2023 vintage combines concentration with freshness, while critics have highlighted the wine’s chalky restraint, creamy texture and citrus-driven precision. Berry Bros. & Rudd notes savoury spice, pear and nutty complexity balanced by mineral freshness, while James Suckling awarded the wine 95 points.

On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a silky, rounded texture supported by vibrant acidity and saline minerality. Orchard fruit, citrus and subtle oak spice flow through a long, harmonious and focused finish. Compared to more tension-driven Meursault sites such as Perrières, Charmes is generally broader and more generous, though Faiveley’s modern winemaking style brings greater precision and restraint than traditional richer interpretations. The 2023 vintage is especially attractive for its balance between immediate charm and strong ageing potential.

Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is a perfect example of modern Meursault - generous and textural, yet still mineral and refined. Compared to Puligny-Montrachet, it’s broader, creamier and more expressive; compared to richer New World Chardonnay, it still retains unmistakable Burgundy precision and chalky tension. The 2023 vintage is especially appealing because it combines freshness with approachability, making it enjoyable earlier while still offering excellent cellar potential. This is a beautifully balanced Premier Cru Burgundy that already shows impressive complexity but will continue to evolve gracefully over the next decade or more. Drink from 2026 onwards or with extended decanting now, and cellar for 12–18+ years. Perfect with lobster, scallops, roast chicken or creamy mushroom dishes.
