The 2022 Domaine Faiveley Meursault 1er Cru Charmes is a classic white Burgundy from one of Meursault’s most celebrated Premier Cru vineyards. Located on the southern side of the appellation near Puligny-Montrachet, Charmes is renowned for producing Chardonnay that combines richness, texture and generosity with underlying mineral tension and balance. Domaine Faiveley, established in 1825, remains one of Burgundy’s most historic and respected producers.
The nose is elegant and layered, showing white peach, pear and lemon zest alongside toasted hazelnut, brioche and subtle oak spice. The 2022 vintage delivers more ripeness and concentration than the cooler 2021 vintage, while still retaining freshness and energy. Floral lift and gentle creamy notes add further complexity, supported by a refined mineral edge.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a silky, rounded texture balanced by vibrant acidity and chalky minerality. Orchard fruit, citrus and subtle nutty oak notes flow through a long, harmonious and persistent finish. Compared to more tension-driven Meursault sites such as Perrières, Charmes is broader and more generous, though Faiveley’s modern style under Erwan Faiveley brings greater precision and restraint than older richer interpretations. The wine also benefits from extended élevage in French oak, adding texture and depth without overwhelming the terroir expression.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is a perfect example of classic Meursault richness balanced by modern precision. Compared to Puligny-Montrachet, it’s broader, creamier and more textural; compared to richer New World Chardonnay, it still retains unmistakable Burgundy minerality and finesse. The 2022 vintage is especially attractive because it combines generosity and immediate charm with enough acidity and structure for long-term ageing. This is a beautifully balanced Premier Cru Burgundy that can already show impressively with air but will continue to evolve for many years. Drink from 2025 onwards or cellar for 12–18+ years. Perfect with lobster, scallops, roast chicken or creamy mushroom dishes.
