The 2021 Domaine Pierre Gaillard Côte-Rôtie Rose Pourpre is sourced from a steep one-hectare parcel in the Côte Rozier lieu-dit, situated just below the famed La Landonne vineyard in the heart of Côte Brune. Planted to around 40-year-old Syrah vines on schist-rich soils, the amphitheatre-shaped site benefits from a warm, sheltered microclimate enhanced by traditional stone walls that retain heat. Pierre Gaillard is one of the Northern Rhône’s most respected growers, and Rose Pourpre is widely regarded as his most powerful and age-worthy Côte-Rôtie, matured for 18 months in predominantly new French oak barrels.
The nose reveals black raspberry, plum, smoked cherry, violet, black pepper and graphite, layered with subtle spice, floral notes and mineral complexity. On the palate, it is concentrated yet refined, with silky tannins, vibrant acidity and remarkable purity of fruit. Dark berries, wild herbs and savoury nuances build through a long, spicy finish marked by both power and elegance. Matt Walls awarded the wine 95 points, praising its Côte Brune character, generosity and balance, while Jeb Dunnuck rated it 90–92 points for its purity, precision and finesse.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A superb Côte-Rôtie that captures the elegance of the 2021 vintage while retaining the depth and structure that define Rose Pourpre. The combination of dark fruit, floral complexity and mineral intensity makes this a classic Northern Rhône Syrah. Pair with roast lamb, venison, beef rib, game birds or rich mushroom dishes. Approachable with decanting today, but best from 2027 onwards and capable of evolving beautifully through 2040 and beyond.
