Poppies Martinborough is one of New Zealand's most celebrated boutique wineries, located in the heart of the renowned Martinborough wine region in the Wairarapa. Founded by husband-and-wife team Poppy and Shayne Hammond, the winery was established in 2012 after many years working at the iconic Dry River estate. Their vision was to create handcrafted wines that reflect the traditions of the Old World while expressing the distinctive terroir of Martinborough with authenticity and precision.
The estate is surrounded by carefully managed vineyards in Martinborough, a region famous for its cool climate, long growing season, and free-draining ancient river terrace soils. Warm daytime temperatures, cool nights, and low rainfall provide ideal conditions for slow, even ripening, allowing grapes to develop concentrated flavours while retaining vibrant natural acidity. Poppies farms its vineyards using biological and organic principles, with minimal intervention and a deep respect for the land, although the vineyards are not formally certified organic.
Poppies is best known for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Rosé, and Sauvignon Blanc. The Pinot Noir showcases Martinborough's hallmark elegance with layers of cherry, raspberry, spice, and fine earthy complexity, while the aromatic whites are inspired by Alsatian traditions, offering exceptional purity, texture, and balance.
