The 2021 Place of Changing Winds Heathcote Syrah is a powerful yet finely detailed expression from one of Victoria’s most exciting modern producers. Sourced from an east-facing site of 20+ year-old vines on the famed red Cambrian soils of the Mount Camel Range, the wine undergoes extended maturation (around 33 months in Stockinger oak and concrete), resulting in a style that balances depth with precision. The nose is deep and complex, revealing blackberry, black cherry and plum layered with violet, warm spice and cracked pepper. There is a pronounced savoury dimension, with notes of charcuterie, olive and subtle dark chocolate, alongside a distinctive mineral edge from the iron-rich soils.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with fine, resolved tannins and vibrant acidity that provide both power and control. The fruit is concentrated yet fresh, supported by layers of spice, earth and mineral nuance. Despite its richness, the wine remains composed and energetic, with a long, savoury and persistent finish that reflects both structure and finesse.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is a standout Heathcote Syrah that combines regional intensity with a modern, Rhône-inspired sense of balance. Compared to heavier, more opulent Shiraz styles, it offers more structure, spice and mineral tension while still delivering depth and concentration. With strong critical acclaim (around 95 points) and extended ageing already built in, it is drinking beautifully now but will continue to evolve through 2035+. Excellent with lamb, beef, game meats or slow-cooked, savoury dishes.
