PENNY'S HILL
Penny’s Hill is a distinguished winery located in McLaren Vale, South Australia, known for its premium single-vineyard wines and commitment to sustainable viticulture. Established in 1988 by Tony and Susie Parkinson, the estate is centered around the historic ‘Ingleburne’ homestead, which dates back to 1855. The property began with 32 hectares of grazing land, and the first vines were planted in 1991 using a unique narrow-row configuration to enhance fruit quality. Over the years, the vineyard holdings expanded to include the nearby Malpas Road and Goss Corner vineyards, totaling 44 hectares.
Specializing in Shiraz, Grenache, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Penny’s Hill has garnered international acclaim for its expressive, terroir-driven wines. Among its standout achievements are the 2014 Edwards Road Cabernet Sauvignon, which was named the “World’s Best Cabernet” at the 2016 Concours International des Cabernets in France, and the 2023 Yeenunga Single Vineyard Grenache, which won “Best in Show” at the 2024 Decanter World Wine Awards. These accolades highlight the estate’s focus on quality and innovation, guided by Chief Winemaker Alexia Roberts since 2013.
In 2022, Penny’s Hill was acquired by the Randall Wine Group, Australia’s largest private owner of premium vineyards. Under new ownership, the winery has continued to emphasize sustainability and was certified by Sustainable Winegrowing Australia in 2023. Plans are also underway to enhance the visitor experience, with a $4 million redevelopment of the estate into a tourism village set to open in 2025. Located at 281 Main Road, McLaren Vale, Penny’s Hill remains a vibrant and respected name in Australian wine, celebrated for both its heritage and forward-thinking approach.
