A dark, savoury and highly distinctive Italian-inspired red from Pat Underwood, made from just three rows of Refosco at the Chalmers Vineyard in Colbinabbin. Grown on ultra-red iron-rich soils and matured partly in Stockinger demi-muid, the wine combines deep fruit with spice, freshness and earthy complexity. The nose shows black cherry, plum and blackberry alongside rosemary, cinnamon, tobacco, rose petal and dark spice. There’s a wild, amaro-like savoury edge with earthy herbs and subtle chocolate notes adding depth.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied with juicy dark fruit, bright acidity and firm savoury tannins. Blood orange, liquorice and pepper spice carry through a long, brooding finish with plenty of freshness and energy despite the wine’s darker profile.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A seriously characterful modern Victorian red - somewhere between Friulian Refosco, Nebbiolo and lo-fi Heathcote energy. Savoury, spicy and incredibly food friendly, especially with pasta ragù, lamb, chargrilled meats or mushroom dishes. Best with a decant or slight chill. Drink now through 2033+.
