LAURENT ROUMIER

Domaine Laurent Roumier is based in Chambolle-Musigny in the Côte de Nuits, Burgundy. Laurent is a grandson of the legendary Georges Roumier and cousin of Christophe Roumier, but since 1991 he has operated independently, establishing his own domaine with about four hectares of vines rented from the family. Over time, the estate has grown to roughly 12 hectares, giving him holdings across a range of appellations from simple Bourgogne to prestigious Grand Crus.

The vineyards are farmed with traditional, natural methods, avoiding chemical fertilisers and herbicides, with green harvesting as needed and hand-picking at harvest. Many of the vines average 35 years of age, with some older parcels contributing concentration and depth. The domaine’s terroirs span Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, village Chambolle-Musigny, several Premier Cru sites such as Les Charmes, Les Noirots, Les Groseilles and Les Gruenchers, as well as small but prized holdings in Bonnes-Mares and Clos de Vougeot. The soils are dominated by limestone with thin, stony layers that give the wines their finesse and minerality.

In the cellar, Laurent Roumier follows a classic Burgundian approach. Grapes are mostly destemmed, sometimes with a small proportion of whole clusters, and fermented in concrete vats with daily pump-overs and punch-downs. Fermentation typically lasts around two weeks before the wines are aged for 15–18 months, often in older barrels, with a judicious use of new oak—up to 50% for the Grand and Premier Crus, and much less for the village and regional wines. The wines are lightly filtered before bottling to preserve purity.

The resulting style is one of finesse, perfume, and clarity, very much in line with the floral, red-fruited elegance associated with Chambolle-Musigny. While the Bourgogne and village wines are accessible young, the Premier and Grand Crus show greater depth and structure, rewarding patience in the cellar. Flagship cuvées such as Bonnes-Mares, Clos de Vougeot, and Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes are particularly admired for their balance of power and refinement. Today, Domaine Laurent Roumier stands as a respected name in Burgundy, combining the legacy of a storied family with a personal, artisanal touch.
