Gala Estate is a family-owned vineyard and winery located at Cranbrook on Tasmania’s East Coast, within one of Australia’s most exciting cool-climate wine regions. Although the vineyard itself is relatively young, the property carries an extraordinary agricultural history: the Amos family first settled the land in 1821, and their descendants continue to farm it more than 200 years later. Gala Estate is recognised as Tasmania’s second-oldest family business.

The story began when brothers Adam and John Amos left Galashiels in Scotland and settled at Cranbrook. Over successive generations, the family farmed livestock and crops, including wheat that was eventually milled into flour. The modern wine chapter began following the challenges of drought in 2007, when the family looked toward viticulture as part of a more diversified and sustainable future for the property.

The first vines at Gala Estate were planted in 2009, with the inaugural vintage following in 2011. The original Gala Vineyard comprises approximately 11 hectares, positioned on a carefully selected section of the family's much larger agricultural property. Its steep, rocky, ironstone-rich north-facing slopes provide naturally challenging conditions for the vines, encouraging deep root systems and concentrated fruit.

Gala Estate has subsequently expanded with the 17-hectare Cressy Vineyard, situated south of Swansea and influenced by Tasmania's coastal environment and proximity to the Freycinet Peninsula. The first fruit from Cressy was harvested in 2023, and additional varieties and clones have been planted to broaden the possibilities of the Gala Estate portfolio.

Pinot Noir is one of Gala Estate's defining varieties. Tasmania's cool growing conditions allow Pinot Noir to develop slowly while maintaining natural acidity, perfume and freshness. Gala Estate has established an impressive reputation for the variety, being named Tasmanian Pinot Producer of the Year for three consecutive years in 2023, 2024 and 2025.

At the pinnacle of its Pinot Noir collection sits Constable Amos, named after family ancestor Adam Amos, who became Chief District Constable shortly after settling in Tasmania. Produced from the estate vineyard at Cranbrook, it represents one of Gala Estate's most ambitious expressions of Pinot Noir and connects the family's modern winemaking directly with its Tasmanian history.

Chardonnay and Syrah are equally important to the modern Gala Estate identity. Chardonnay benefits from Tasmania's long, cool growing season, producing wines with freshness and structure, while the estate's Syrah demonstrates the potential of the East Coast for elegant, cool-climate expressions of the variety. The Emerald Syrah, named after the ship that brought the Amos family to Tasmania, has become another particularly recognised wine in the collection.

The wider range also extends to sparkling wine, Riesling and Pinot Gris, giving Gala Estate a diverse portfolio centred on varieties well suited to Tasmania's cool climate. Across the collection, the emphasis is on fruit purity, elegance and wines that retain a clear sense of their Tasmanian origins.

Winemaking is currently led by Liam McElhinney, an experienced cool-climate winemaker originally from Marlborough, New Zealand. His background includes work across New Zealand as well as France, Canada and the United States, and his Australian achievements include winning the 2023 Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy.

Sustainability remains closely connected to Gala Estate's origins as a working farm. The family continues to raise thousands of sheep alongside its vineyards, while large areas of native forest on the property are protected for conservation. Vineyard management seeks to work with the surrounding agricultural ecosystem rather than treating wine production as an isolated activity.
