DOMAINE DE TREVALLON

Domaine de Trévallon is one of France's most iconic cult wineries, producing distinctive wines that have redefined the reputation of Provence. Situated in the Alpilles between Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and Saint-Étienne-du-Grès, the estate is renowned for its uncompromising philosophy, organic farming, and singular style that defies regional convention. Founded by the visionary Éloi Dürrbach in the early 1970s, Domaine de Trévallon has become one of the most collectible and influential producers in French wine.

The estate was established on land purchased in 1960 by Éloi's parents, artists René Dürrbach and Jacqueline de la Baume, who were close friends of Pablo Picasso. Inspired by the rugged limestone landscape of the Alpilles, Éloi planted his first vineyards in 1973, believing the terroir was perfectly suited to vines despite prevailing opinion at the time. His bold decision to plant Cabernet Sauvignon alongside Syrah—an unprecedented choice for Provence—created a wine unlike any other in the region and established Trévallon as a true iconoclast.

The vineyards lie within the Alpilles Regional Natural Park on ancient limestone soils mixed with clay, marl, sand, and glacial scree. Around 15 hectares of vines, propagated exclusively through massal selection, are divided across more than 40 small parcels surrounded by pine forests, olive groves, and Mediterranean garrigue. Organic farming has been practised since the beginning, with biodiversity and respect for the natural ecosystem at the heart of the estate's philosophy.

Domaine de Trévallon's flagship red is traditionally produced from approximately equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, creating a remarkably elegant yet powerful wine with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, violets, cedar, graphite, wild herbs, olive tapenade, spice, and crushed limestone. The estate's white wine blends Marsanne, Roussanne, Clairette, and a small proportion of Chardonnay, offering exceptional texture, freshness, and mineral complexity. Both wines are crafted using indigenous yeasts, minimal intervention, and extended maturation, allowing the distinctive character of the Alpilles terroir to shine through.

For decades, Trévallon stood apart from appellation regulations because its Cabernet Sauvignon plantings exceeded the permitted proportions for the local AOC. Rather than compromise the wine's identity, Éloi Dürrbach chose to remain outside the rules, reinforcing the estate's reputation for independence and authenticity. This unwavering commitment to quality has made Domaine de Trévallon one of the most admired names in French wine, with bottles sought after by collectors around the world.

Following Éloi Dürrbach's passing in 2021, the estate entered a new chapter under the leadership of his daughter Ostiane, who continues to preserve the family's philosophy of respect for nature, artisanal winemaking, and uncompromising terroir expression. Today, Domaine de Trévallon remains one of Provence's most distinctive estates, producing wines of extraordinary character, longevity, and international acclaim.
