DOMAINE DE L'ECU
Domaine de l'Ecu is one of the Loire Valley's most influential biodynamic estates, renowned for producing terroir-driven wines of remarkable purity, precision, and mineral expression. Located in the Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine appellation near Nantes, the domaine has become a benchmark for Melon de Bourgogne while also crafting exceptional Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, and sparkling wines. Founded in 1975 by Guy Bossard and now led by Fred Niger, Domaine de l'Ecu is internationally recognised for its unwavering commitment to organic farming, biodynamics, and natural winemaking.
The estate comprises approximately 30 hectares of organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards spread across a remarkable diversity of soils, including granite, gneiss, orthogneiss, mica schist, amphibolite, and gabbro. These ancient geological formations give each vineyard a distinctive identity, allowing Domaine de l'Ecu to produce single-soil cuvées that clearly express the mineral character of their individual terroirs. Influenced by the nearby Atlantic Ocean, the cool maritime climate preserves freshness, natural acidity, and aromatic precision throughout the growing season.
Domaine de l'Ecu is best known for its Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine, produced from Melon de Bourgogne, a variety capable of remarkable complexity and longevity when grown on exceptional terroir. The wines display aromas of citrus, green apple, pear, white flowers, oyster shell, flint, and saline minerality, supported by vibrant acidity and a long, textured finish. The estate also produces expressive Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Gamay, and naturally made sparkling wines, all crafted with the same philosophy of transparency and site expression.
The winery has been certified organic since 1975 and adopted biodynamic farming in the late 1980s, making it one of France's earliest biodynamic pioneers. Vineyards are cultivated without synthetic chemicals, grapes are harvested by hand, and fermentations rely on indigenous yeasts. Minimal intervention in the cellar, limited sulphur use, and ageing in concrete, amphorae, oak, or sandstone vessels allow each wine to faithfully reflect its vineyard origin.
Today, Domaine de l'Ecu is regarded as one of the Loire Valley's finest producers and a global reference for biodynamic Muscadet. Highly respected by sommeliers, collectors, and critics, the estate continues to demonstrate the extraordinary quality and ageing potential of Loire wines through its uncompromising commitment to terroir and sustainable viticulture.
