Devotus is one of New Zealand's most sought-after boutique wineries, dedicated exclusively to producing exceptional single-vineyard Pinot Noir from the renowned Martinborough Terrace. Founded by Don and Valerie McConachy, the estate is driven by an unwavering devotion to one grape variety, crafting wines that reflect the remarkable terroir of one of the Southern Hemisphere's greatest Pinot Noir regions.
The vineyard occupies just three hectares in the heart of the Martinborough Terrace, an ancient river terrace formed by the Ruamahanga River. The stony, free-draining soils, cool climate, and long growing season provide ideal conditions for Pinot Noir, allowing the vines to produce fruit of exceptional concentration, elegance, and natural balance. Many of the vines are among the earliest Pinot Noir plantings in Martinborough and are dry-grown without irrigation, producing naturally low yields of remarkable intensity.
Unlike most wineries, Devotus grows only Pinot Noir and produces just three wines: Aprentis of Devotus, Devotus Single Vineyard Pinot Noir, and Devotus Reserve Single Vineyard Pinot Noir. Each wine is made to express the vineyard with minimal intervention, displaying aromas of wild cherry, raspberry, plum, rose petals, dried herbs, forest floor, and savoury spice, supported by silky tannins, vibrant acidity, and impressive ageing potential.
The vineyard is managed organically, with biodiversity playing a central role in its farming philosophy. Cover crops including oats, clover, chicory, and lupins are cultivated to naturally improve soil health, while grapes are harvested by hand and fermented with indigenous yeasts. Winemaking is deliberately restrained, with little or no fining, filtration, or sulphur additions, allowing each vintage to transparently express the vineyard and season.
Despite its tiny production, Devotus has developed a cult following among collectors and Pinot Noir enthusiasts. The wines are frequently offered en primeur and often sell out soon after release, earning praise for their Burgundian elegance, purity, and remarkable sense of place. Today, Devotus stands among Martinborough's most respected boutique producers and is widely regarded as one of New Zealand's finest specialists in Pinot Noir.
