DALWOOD ESTATE
Dalwood Estate is one of Australia's most historic wineries and is widely recognised as the birthplace of Hunter Valley wine. Established in 1828 by wine pioneer George Wyndham, the estate is home to Australia's oldest continuous commercial vineyard and has played a defining role in the development of the Australian wine industry for almost two centuries. Today, under the guidance of winemaker Bryan Currie, Dalwood Estate continues to honour its remarkable heritage while producing elegant, modern expressions of Hunter Valley terroir.
Situated on the banks of the Hunter River in New South Wales, the estate benefits from a warm climate moderated by cooling afternoon breezes and a diverse range of sandy loam, gravel, and red loam soils. The original vineyards were planted using cuttings from the famous collections assembled by James Busby, John Macarthur, William Blaxland, and William Shepherd, helping establish many of Australia's earliest wine varieties. These historic vineyard sites remain the foundation of Dalwood Estate's distinctive wines today.
Dalwood Estate is best known for its classic Hunter Valley Semillon, alongside premium Chardonnay, Shiraz, Fiano, Rosé, and Tempranillo Touriga. The Semillon showcases the Hunter Valley's hallmark freshness with citrus, lemongrass, and mineral notes, while Chardonnay offers vibrant stone fruit and refined oak. Shiraz displays dark berry fruit, spice, earthy complexity, and fine tannins, reflecting the region's signature medium-bodied, age-worthy style.
The winery combines nearly 200 years of viticultural knowledge with contemporary winemaking techniques. Sustainable vineyard management, careful fruit selection, and restrained oak maturation allow each wine to express its vineyard origin while maintaining balance, elegance, and exceptional drinkability. Dalwood's philosophy respects its pioneering past while embracing innovation for future generations.
Throughout its long history, Dalwood Estate has been associated with some of Australia's most influential names in wine, including Penfolds, Wyndham Estate, and the McGuigan family. Following the return of the historic Dalwood name in 2017, the estate has re-established itself as one of Hunter Valley's benchmark producers, continuing a legacy that has shaped Australian wine since the early colonial era.
