The 2020 Christophe Billon Côte-Rôtie La Viallière is a single-vineyard Syrah sourced from the steep schist-rich slopes of La Viallière in Côte-Rôtie. Christophe Billon, a former collaborator of Guigal, is renowned for crafting site-specific wines that emphasise purity and terroir expression. This cuvée is produced from 100% Syrah and aged in French oak, resulting in a refined and highly aromatic interpretation of this celebrated Northern Rhône appellation.
The nose is beautifully lifted, revealing red and black berries, rose petals, violets and floral incense, alongside subtle notes of spice and smoke. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is elegant and supple, with silky tannins, vibrant freshness and impressive balance. Jeb Dunnuck awarded the wine 92–94 points, praising its floral complexity and refined texture, while Wine Spectator scored it 91 points for its aromatic lift and savoury finish.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A beautifully perfumed Côte-Rôtie that highlights finesse and elegance over sheer power. Silky, floral and wonderfully expressive, it pairs beautifully with roast lamb, duck, game birds, mushroom dishes and grilled beef. Enjoy now with a decant or cellar through 2040 for added complexity and nuance.
