CHATEAU TALBOT
Château Talbot is one of the best-known estates of Saint-Julien, producing classic Left Bank Bordeaux renowned for its generous fruit, structured character and impressive ageing potential. Classified as a Fourth Growth (Quatrième Cru Classé) in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification, Talbot combines an extensive vineyard holding with a long history and a distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon-led style.
The château's name is traditionally associated with John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury, an English military commander connected with the final stages of the Hundred Years' War in Bordeaux. In the modern era, Château Talbot has been closely associated with the Cordier family, whose stewardship has played an important role in establishing the estate's international reputation.
Château Talbot possesses one of the larger vineyard holdings among the classified estates of Saint-Julien. Its vines grow primarily on deep Garonne gravel soils, which provide excellent drainage and retain warmth during the growing season. These conditions are particularly favourable to Cabernet Sauvignon, while the nearby Gironde estuary helps moderate temperatures and encourage gradual ripening.
Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone of Château Talbot, complemented primarily by Merlot, with Petit Verdot also contributing to the blend. Cabernet Sauvignon provides cassis, structure and longevity, while Merlot adds richness and supple texture. Petit Verdot can contribute additional colour, floral character and spice.
The wines typically display aromas and flavours of blackcurrant, cassis, blackberry and plum, accompanied by cedar, graphite, tobacco, violet and savoury spice. The palate combines ripe fruit with structured yet polished tannins and refreshing acidity, delivering the balance of power and refinement associated with traditional Saint-Julien.
Careful vineyard management and selective harvesting are followed by precise vinification of individual parcels. Maturation in French oak barrels adds texture and complexity while preserving the château's fruit-driven character. Strong vintages can develop beautifully over many years, gaining notes of cigar box, leather, dried herbs and forest floor.
Château Talbot also produces Connétable de Talbot, its second wine, as well as the distinctive dry white Caillou Blanc de Château Talbot. Produced from white Bordeaux varieties, Caillou Blanc provides a contrasting expression of the estate and has developed a loyal following among enthusiasts of Bordeaux Blanc.
