The 2016 Château Sociando-Mallet is a benchmark Haut-Médoc from one of Bordeaux’s most respected independent estates. Situated on prime gravelly soils overlooking the Gironde estuary, the château has built an international reputation for producing classically styled wines that rival many classified growths. The outstanding 2016 vintage has delivered a wine of remarkable depth, structure and precision, with the concentration and balance to reward long-term cellaring.
The nose reveals blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry aromas layered with cedar, graphite, tobacco and subtle spice. The palate is powerful yet beautifully refined, with concentrated dark fruit supported by firm, fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. Notes of liquorice, crushed stone and cocoa add complexity, while the finish is long, structured and exceptionally persistent.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A superb classic Bordeaux that perfectly captures the character of the great 2016 vintage. Its depth and structure make it an outstanding match for roast lamb, ribeye steak, braised beef, venison and aged hard cheeses. Decant if enjoying now, or cellar confidently through 2045+ as it develops even greater complexity, elegance and tertiary character.
