CHATEAU SIGALAS RABAUD

Château Sigalas Rabaud is a historic Premier Cru Classé (First Growth) estate in Sauternes, recognised in the prestigious 1855 Classification of Sauternes and Barsac. Located in the commune of Bommes, the château produces elegant botrytised sweet wines distinguished by their aromatic intensity, freshness, concentration and impressive capacity for ageing.

The estate originated from the historic Rabaud property and has developed its own identity over generations. Today, Château Sigalas Rabaud remains closely associated with the de Lambert family, giving the property a strong sense of continuity and family stewardship within one of Bordeaux's most famous sweet-wine appellations.

The vineyards benefit from the unique climatic conditions responsible for the great wines of Sauternes. The nearby Ciron and Garonne rivers create cool autumn mists that encourage the development of Botrytis cinerea, or noble rot. Warmer and drier afternoons then allow the grapes to concentrate gradually while maintaining the acidity required for balance and longevity.

Sémillon dominates the vineyard, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc. Sémillon is particularly receptive to noble rot and contributes richness, texture and honeyed complexity, while Sauvignon Blanc provides citrus freshness, aromatic lift and additional precision.

Château Sigalas Rabaud typically reveals layers of apricot, peach, citrus and tropical fruit, accompanied by acacia, honeysuckle, honey, saffron and delicate spice. Despite its sweetness and concentration, the wine is known for maintaining freshness and balance, giving it an elegant profile rather than relying solely on richness.

Producing fine Sauternes requires an extraordinarily selective harvest. Pickers make multiple passes through the vineyard, known as tries, selecting individual grapes and bunches only when noble rot has reached the desired stage. This painstaking process results in very low yields but creates the concentrated flavours and complexity required for the grand vin.

Careful fermentation and maturation help preserve the balance between sweetness, acidity and aromatic purity. With bottle age, Château Sigalas Rabaud can develop additional notes of marmalade, dried apricot, beeswax, caramel and toasted nuts, while retaining the freshness characteristic of high-quality Sauternes.

As a Premier Cru Classé, Château Sigalas Rabaud offers collectors a compelling expression of traditional Sauternes. Its combination of historic classification, family ownership, Sémillon-dominant vineyards and refined botrytised character makes it an excellent choice for lovers of age-worthy sweet Bordeaux.
