CHATEAU RABAUD PROMIS
Château Rabaud-Promis is a historic Premier Cru Classé (First Growth) estate in Sauternes, recognised in the prestigious 1855 Classification of Sauternes and Barsac. Located in the commune of Bommes, the château produces elegant botrytised sweet wines that combine concentrated fruit, honeyed complexity and vibrant acidity with impressive ageing potential.
The estate traces its origins to the historic Rabaud property, which was divided during the 19th century into what became Château Rabaud-Promis and Château Sigalas Rabaud. Rabaud-Promis subsequently developed its own identity and remains an important name among the classified estates of Sauternes.
The vineyards benefit from the distinctive microclimate that makes Sauternes one of the world's great sweet-wine regions. The nearby Ciron and Garonne rivers create cool autumn mists that encourage the development of Botrytis cinerea, or noble rot. Producing Château Rabaud-Promis requires a highly selective and labour-intensive harvest. Pickers make several passes through the vineyard, harvesting grapes only when noble rot has achieved the desired level of concentration. These extremely low yields are essential to creating the intensity and complexity associated with classified Sauternes.
Fermentation and maturation are carefully managed to preserve fruit purity while developing additional depth and texture. Ageing in French oak barrels contributes complexity and subtle spice. With bottle development, the wines can evolve towards dried apricot, marmalade, beeswax, caramel and toasted nut characters while retaining their underlying freshness.
