CHATEAU PAVIE MACQUIN

Château Pavie Macquin is one of the distinguished estates of Saint-Émilion, producing powerful yet refined Bordeaux from an exceptional position on the appellation's limestone plateau. The château takes its name from Albert Macquin, an influential viticulturist who played an important role in rebuilding Saint-Émilion's vineyards following the phylloxera crisis of the late 19th century. Château Pavie Macquin occupies an outstanding vineyard site on the elevated plateau above Saint-Émilion. The terroir is dominated by clay over limestone, providing excellent water regulation and encouraging deep root development. The limestone contributes freshness, tension and mineral character, while the clay supports the richness and concentration for which the estate is known.

Merlot forms the majority of the vineyard, complemented primarily by Cabernet Franc and a smaller proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot provides generous black cherry and plum fruit with a rich texture, while Cabernet Franc contributes floral perfume, freshness and spice. Cabernet Sauvignon can add further structure and complexity.

The wines typically reveal layers of black cherry, blackberry, plum and raspberry, accompanied by violet, liquorice, graphite, crushed stone, herbs and exotic spice. The palate combines impressive concentration with vibrant acidity and finely structured tannins, giving Pavie Macquin both immediate intensity and the capacity for extended bottle ageing.

The modern reputation of Château Pavie Macquin has been strongly influenced by Nicolas Thienpont, who has overseen the estate for decades, together with consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt. Their terroir-focused approach emphasises careful vineyard management, precise harvesting and restrained extraction, allowing the limestone character of the vineyard to remain central to the wine.

Individual vineyard parcels are vinified separately before blending, followed by carefully controlled maturation. French oak is used alongside an increasingly nuanced approach to ageing vessels, with the objective of building texture and complexity without obscuring the purity of the fruit or the mineral character of the terroir.
