CHATEAU LEOVILLE POYFERRE

Château Léoville-Poyferré is a prestigious Bordeaux wine estate located in the Saint-Julien appellation of the Médoc, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux’s Gironde estuary. Classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé (Second Growth) in the 1855 Bordeaux Wine Official Classification, the estate has long been admired for its balance of elegance, depth, and power. The property has been owned by the Cuvelier family since 1920 and covers around 80 hectares of vineyards planted on the region’s classic gravel soils — an ideal terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon.

The estate’s vineyards are planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. These traditional Bordeaux varieties form the backbone of Léoville-Poyferré’s wines, which combine modern winemaking precision with traditional craftsmanship. The wines are typically aged in oak barrels to enhance structure and complexity, resulting in a style that marries richness and finesse.

Château Léoville-Poyferré produces two primary wines. The Grand Vin, bearing the estate’s name, is the flagship expression, admired for its depth, structure, and impressive ageing potential. It often displays layers of dark fruit, cassis, tobacco, and spice, framed by fine tannins and remarkable balance. The second wine, Pavillon de Léoville-Poyferré, is crafted for earlier enjoyment but still reflects the estate’s quality and signature style.

The estate’s history dates back to the 17th century, when it was part of a vast property known simply as Léoville. Over time, this original estate was divided into three renowned names: Château Léoville-Las Cases, Château Léoville-Barton, and Château Léoville-Poyferré. The Poyferré portion was established as a separate estate in 1840 through a family inheritance and later secured its Second Growth classification in 1855.

Today, Château Léoville-Poyferré stands among the most respected names in Saint-Julien. Its wines are celebrated for their consistency, refined structure, and exceptional capacity to age gracefully. With a style that combines Left Bank power and Saint-Julien elegance, Léoville-Poyferré continues to be a benchmark for excellence within Bordeaux’s Second Growth estates.
