CHATEAU LEOVILLE LAS CASES
Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the most prestigious estates in Saint-Julien and a benchmark for fine Left Bank Bordeaux. Classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification, the estate is renowned for producing exceptionally structured, complex and long-lived Cabernet Sauvignon-led wines. Its consistency and extraordinary ageing potential have established Léoville Las Cases among the most collectible wines of the Médoc.
The estate traces its origins to the historic Léoville property, once one of the largest vineyard holdings in the Médoc. Following divisions during the 19th century, the original estate ultimately gave rise to Château Léoville Las Cases, Château Léoville Barton and Château Léoville Poyferré. Today, Léoville Las Cases remains under the stewardship of the Delon family, whose meticulous approach has helped preserve its reputation at the highest level of Bordeaux.
At the heart of the estate is the famous Grand Enclos, a walled vineyard situated beside the Gironde estuary at the northern edge of Saint-Julien, immediately adjoining Pauillac. Its deep Garonne gravel soils over clay and gravelly subsoils provide outstanding drainage and are particularly well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The proximity of the Gironde helps moderate temperatures, creating favourable conditions for slow and even ripening.
Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the vineyard, complemented by Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Cabernet Sauvignon gives the grand vin its characteristic blackcurrant fruit, graphite, structure and remarkable longevity, while Merlot adds richness and texture. Cabernet Franc contributes perfume, freshness and additional aromatic complexity.
Château Léoville Las Cases typically reveals layers of cassis, blackberry, black cherry and plum, accompanied by cedar, graphite, violet, tobacco, pencil shavings and savoury spice. The wine is particularly renowned for its concentration, mineral precision and powerful yet finely sculpted tannins. In its youth, it can be remarkably structured, but extended bottle ageing reveals extraordinary complexity and refinement.
Viticulture and winemaking are conducted with rigorous attention to individual vineyard parcels. Grapes are harvested according to optimal maturity and vinified separately before a strict selection process determines the final blend. Maturation in French oak barrels adds depth and complexity while maintaining the distinctive character of the Grand Enclos.
The estate also produces Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases, while Clos du Marquis is an important wine from separate vineyard holdings and should not simply be considered the second wine of Léoville Las Cases. This distinction reflects the Delon family's emphasis on expressing the individual terroirs within its Saint-Julien properties.
For serious Bordeaux collectors, Château Léoville Las Cases represents one of the definitive expressions of Saint-Julien. Its Second Growth pedigree, exceptional gravel terroir and Cabernet-dominant style combine to produce wines capable of evolving magnificently for several decades.
