CHATEAU LANESSAN

Château Lanessan is a historic Bordeaux estate in the Haut-Médoc, producing classic Cabernet Sauvignon-led wines that combine structure, freshness and traditional Left Bank character. Situated near the prestigious Saint-Julien appellation, Lanessan has long been admired for delivering authentic Médoc style and impressive ageing potential.

The estate's history stretches back several centuries and is closely associated with the Bouteiller family, whose stewardship extended across generations. The château itself, constructed in the 19th century in a distinctive Tudor-inspired style, is surrounded by vineyards and woodland that form part of the historic Lanessan property.

Château Lanessan occupies an excellent position in the commune of Cussac-Fort-Médoc, close to the vineyards of Saint-Julien. Its vines are planted primarily on deep gravel soils, providing the free drainage and heat retention particularly favourable to Cabernet Sauvignon. The maritime influence of the Gironde estuary further moderates temperatures and supports gradual, even ripening.

Cabernet Sauvignon traditionally forms the backbone of Château Lanessan, complemented by Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. This classic Médoc combination produces wines with both structure and aromatic complexity. Cabernet Sauvignon contributes cassis, tannin and longevity, while Merlot brings roundness and plum fruit. Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc add spice, floral character and further complexity.

The wines typically reveal aromas and flavours of blackcurrant, blackberry, plum and red cherry, accompanied by cedar, graphite, tobacco, dried herbs and subtle spice. The palate is generally medium to full-bodied with firm yet balanced tannins and refreshing acidity. With bottle age, mature examples can develop attractive notes of leather, cigar box, earth and forest floor.

Winemaking at Château Lanessan combines traditional Bordeaux principles with modern precision. Fruit is carefully selected and vinified before maturation in French oak barrels, allowing the wine to gain texture and complexity without losing its characteristic freshness and Médoc identity.

Although Château Lanessan is not part of the 1855 Classification, the estate has historically enjoyed a strong reputation and is frequently appreciated by Bordeaux enthusiasts seeking traditional Haut-Médoc at an accessible level. Its established terroir, Cabernet-driven style and ability to mature gracefully make it a compelling alternative to many classified-growth wines.
