CHATEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD

Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the most prestigious wine estates in the world and a legendary First Growth (Premier Cru Classé) of Pauillac. Ranked at the highest level in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification, Lafite Rothschild is renowned for producing Cabernet Sauvignon-led wines of extraordinary elegance, aromatic complexity and longevity. Its combination of exceptional terroir, centuries of history and extremely limited fine-wine production has made Lafite one of the most coveted names among Bordeaux collectors.

The estate has a long viticultural history, with Château Lafite already enjoying an international reputation by the 18th century. A defining chapter began in 1868, when Baron James de Rothschild acquired the property. Château Lafite has remained under the stewardship of the Rothschild family ever since and today forms the flagship estate of Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite.

Located at the northern end of Pauillac, close to the border with Saint-Estèphe, Lafite's finest vineyards occupy exceptional deep gravel soils over limestone and clay-influenced subsoils. These free-draining gravel terraces are ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, encouraging deep root systems and gradual ripening. The nearby Gironde estuary moderates temperatures and contributes to the favourable mesoclimate of this celebrated part of the Médoc.

Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone of Château Lafite Rothschild, complemented primarily by Merlot, with smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot available within the vineyard. The precise blend changes with each vintage, allowing the estate to select the parcels and varieties that best represent the character of the year.

Château Lafite Rothschild is celebrated for finesse rather than sheer power. Classic vintages can reveal cassis, blackcurrant, blackberry and red fruit alongside cedar, graphite, violet, tobacco, pencil shavings and delicate spice. The palate is typically distinguished by extraordinary precision, fine-grained tannins and remarkable freshness, creating a wine that can appear graceful in its youth yet develop extraordinary complexity over many decades.

Meticulous vineyard management and rigorous selection are fundamental to the estate's philosophy. Individual parcels are harvested and vinified separately before the final blend is assembled. The grand vin is matured in French oak barrels, traditionally produced with significant involvement from the estate's own cooperage, allowing precise control over the quality and character of the oak.

The estate also produces Carruades de Lafite, sourced from selected parcels and younger vines within the Lafite vineyards. While possessing its own identity and often featuring a greater influence from Merlot, Carruades shares the same meticulous viticulture and winemaking standards associated with the property and has itself become highly sought after internationally.

For collectors, Château Lafite Rothschild represents one of the ultimate expressions of Pauillac and Left Bank Bordeaux. Its First Growth status, extraordinary gravel terroir, Rothschild heritage and legendary ability to age have established Lafite as a benchmark against which the world's greatest Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines are measured.
