CHATEAU LA MISSION HAUT BRION
Château La Mission Haut-Brion is one of the most prestigious estates in Pessac-Léognan, producing profound, complex and exceptionally long-lived Bordeaux from the historic Graves region. Situated directly opposite its famous sibling Château Haut-Brion, La Mission Haut-Brion has earned an extraordinary reputation among collectors and critics, with its greatest vintages considered among the finest wines produced anywhere in Bordeaux.
The estate has centuries of viticultural history and takes its name from the Lazarist missionaries who managed the property from the 17th century. A major chapter began in 1983, when La Mission Haut-Brion was acquired by the Dillon family. Today, it forms part of Domaine Clarence Dillon, alongside Château Haut-Brion, benefiting from meticulous vineyard management and generations of experience at the highest level of Bordeaux winemaking.
La Mission Haut-Brion's vineyards lie on the exceptional gravel terraces of Pessac-Léognan. Deep gravel soils mixed with clay and sand provide excellent drainage, retain warmth and encourage vines to develop extensive root systems. This distinctive terroir contributes both concentration and the smoky, mineral complexity traditionally associated with the finest wines of Graves.
The red Château La Mission Haut-Brion is produced from the classic Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with the final proportions varying according to vintage conditions. Cabernet Sauvignon contributes structure, cassis and longevity, Merlot brings richness and supple texture, while Cabernet Franc provides aromatic lift, freshness and additional complexity.
The wine typically reveals layers of blackcurrant, blackberry, plum and dark cherry, accompanied by graphite, cedar, tobacco, smoke, earth, liquorice and warm spice. Its distinctive smoky and mineral character is a hallmark of the Graves terroir. Powerful yet remarkably refined, La Mission Haut-Brion combines concentrated fruit with fine tannins and freshness, allowing exceptional vintages to evolve for many decades.
Viticulture and winemaking are conducted with extraordinary precision. Individual parcels are harvested and vinified separately before rigorous selection and blending. Maturation in carefully selected French oak barrels builds complexity and structure while preserving the character of the vineyard and vintage.
The estate also has an important tradition of producing exceptional white Bordeaux. Today, the rare white wine associated with the property is released as Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc, produced from Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Rich, textured and exceptionally age-worthy, it ranks among Bordeaux's most coveted dry white wines.
For collectors, Château La Mission Haut-Brion represents one of the great names of Left Bank Bordeaux. Although it was not included in the 1855 Médoc classification, its reputation and quality have long placed it among Bordeaux's elite estates, making mature and highly rated vintages particularly sought after.
