CHATEAU KIRWAN

Château Kirwan is a historic Third Growth (Troisième Cru Classé) estate in Margaux, recognised in the prestigious 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Located in the southern part of the Margaux appellation, the château produces refined Left Bank Bordeaux known for combining Cabernet Sauvignon structure with the perfume, elegance and silky texture traditionally associated with Margaux.

The history of Château Kirwan stretches back several centuries. The estate takes its name from Mark Kirwan, an Irish-born merchant who acquired the property in the 18th century and helped establish its reputation. Château Kirwan later came under the ownership of the Schÿler family, whose long stewardship has played an important role in preserving and developing the estate.

The vineyards are situated on well-drained gravel soils characteristic of the finest parts of Margaux. These gravel terraces encourage deep root systems and provide excellent conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, while areas containing more clay are particularly suited to Merlot. The moderating influence of the Gironde estuary helps create a long growing season and supports balanced ripening.

Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone of Château Kirwan, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This classic Médoc combination produces wines with both structure and aromatic complexity. Cabernet Sauvignon contributes cassis, graphite and longevity, while Merlot adds richness and supple texture. Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot provide additional floral, spicy and savoury dimensions.

Château Kirwan typically displays aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, plum and dark cherry, accompanied by violet, cedar, graphite, tobacco and spice. The palate combines concentrated fruit with polished tannins and fresh acidity, delivering the balance of power and finesse that defines high-quality Margaux. With bottle age, the wines can develop further complexity through notes of leather, cigar box, dried flowers and forest floor.

Careful vineyard management and selective harvesting are followed by precise parcel-by-parcel vinification. The wines are matured in French oak barrels, with the proportion of new oak carefully managed according to the vintage. This approach builds texture and complexity while preserving the floral perfume and fruit purity that are central to Château Kirwan's style.

As a Third Growth Margaux, Château Kirwan offers collectors a compelling combination of classified-growth heritage, classic Médoc terroir and impressive ageing potential. Its refined Cabernet-led style makes it an excellent choice for wine lovers exploring the elegance and complexity of traditional Left Bank Bordeaux.
