CHATEAU HAUT BAGES LIBERAL
Château Haut-Bages Libéral is a historic Fifth Growth (Cinquième Cru Classé) estate in Pauillac, recognised in the prestigious 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Situated among some of the Médoc's most celebrated vineyards, the château produces classic Cabernet Sauvignon-led Bordeaux distinguished by cassis fruit, mineral freshness, firm structure and impressive ageing potential.
The estate takes its name from the Libéral family, wine merchants and vineyard owners who established its reputation during the 18th century. Today, Château Haut-Bages Libéral is owned by the Villars family and led by Claire Villars-Lurton, whose approach has placed increasing emphasis on biodiversity, organic and biodynamic viticulture, and expressing the individuality of the estate's Pauillac terroir.
Haut-Bages Libéral occupies an exceptional position within Pauillac, with vineyard parcels located close to renowned estates including Château Latour. The vineyards feature the deep Garonne gravel for which the Médoc is famous, together with clay and limestone influences in certain parcels. These soils provide excellent drainage and encourage deep root systems, contributing concentration, freshness and distinctive mineral character.
Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone of Château Haut-Bages Libéral, complemented primarily by Merlot. The resulting wine displays classic Pauillac characteristics, with aromas and flavours of blackcurrant, blackberry and cassis accompanied by violet, graphite, cedar, tobacco and savoury spice. Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure and longevity, while Merlot contributes roundness and generous fruit.
Viticulture has become an important part of the estate's modern identity. Under Claire Villars-Lurton, Haut-Bages Libéral has pursued organic and biodynamic farming practices, with an emphasis on soil health, biodiversity and allowing the vineyard ecosystem to function naturally. This approach aims to produce wines with greater transparency, freshness and expression of terroir.
In the cellar, individual vineyard parcels are vinified with precision before blending and maturation. French oak is carefully integrated to provide structure and complexity without overwhelming the fruit. The finest vintages combine Pauillac's characteristic power with increasingly refined tannins and vibrant energy, allowing the wines to develop beautifully over many years.
Château Haut-Bages Libéral offers collectors a compelling expression of classified-growth Pauillac. Its historic Fifth Growth status, exceptional vineyard locations and progressive approach to viticulture have established it as an increasingly exciting property within the Médoc.
