CHATEAU FIGEAC
Château Figeac is one of the legendary estates of Saint-Émilion, renowned for producing exceptionally elegant, complex and long-lived Bordeaux. Located on the western edge of the appellation close to Pomerol, Figeac possesses a distinctive terroir and unusually Cabernet-focused vineyard composition that sets it apart from many of its Right Bank neighbours. In the 2022 Classification of Saint-Émilion, Château Figeac was elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé A, confirming its position among the appellation's most prestigious estates.
The château's history stretches back centuries, with the modern estate closely associated with the Manoncourt family, which has owned Figeac since the late 19th century. Thierry Manoncourt played a particularly important role in establishing its modern identity and international reputation. Today, the estate continues to combine its historic heritage with meticulous viticulture and precision winemaking.
Figeac's approximately 54-hectare estate, including around 40 hectares of vines, is distinguished by three prominent gravel ridges over clay subsoils. These deep, free-draining gravel soils are particularly favourable to Cabernet varieties and explain the château's unusual planting profile. Unlike most of Saint-Émilion, where Merlot typically dominates, Figeac has historically devoted significant vineyard area to both Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside Merlot.
This distinctive blend gives Château Figeac its unmistakable character. Cabernet Franc contributes perfume, floral complexity and freshness, Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure and longevity, while Merlot brings richness and supple texture. The wine can reveal layers of blackcurrant, blackberry, red cherry and plum, accompanied by violet, graphite, cedar, tobacco, herbs and subtle spice.
Figeac is renowned for combining concentration with remarkable finesse. Rather than relying on sheer power, the wine is celebrated for its aromatic complexity, silky texture, freshness and refined tannin structure. Great vintages possess extraordinary ageing potential, gradually developing notes of truffle, cigar box, forest floor and dried flowers while maintaining their characteristic elegance.
Meticulous vineyard management, rigorous grape selection and precise parcel-by-parcel vinification are central to the estate's philosophy. Château Figeac has also invested significantly in its winery and cellars, providing the technical precision required to vinify individual vineyard parcels while preserving the personality of this exceptional terroir.
For collectors of fine Bordeaux, Château Figeac represents one of the most distinctive expressions of the Right Bank. Its Premier Grand Cru Classé A status, Cabernet-rich vineyard composition, historic gravel terroir and exceptional longevity have established it as one of the world's most coveted Saint-Émilion wines.
