CHATEAU DOISY DAENE

Château Doisy-Daëne is one of the distinguished estates of Barsac, producing exceptional sweet and dry white Bordeaux from vineyards within the wider Sauternes region. Classified as a Deuxième Cru Classé (Second Growth) in the historic 1855 Classification of Sauternes and Barsac, the estate is renowned for wines that combine luscious concentration with remarkable freshness, precision and elegance.

The château has long been associated with the Dubourdieu family, one of Bordeaux's most respected winemaking families. The late Denis Dubourdieu, an influential winemaker, researcher and professor of oenology, played an important role in shaping the modern reputation of the estate. His work helped establish Doisy-Daëne as a benchmark not only for Barsac's botrytised sweet wines but also for sophisticated dry white Bordeaux.

The vineyards are located on the Barsac plateau, where distinctive limestone soils covered by clay and fine gravel contribute significantly to the estate's style. The nearby Garonne and Ciron rivers create autumn conditions favourable to the development of Botrytis cinerea, or noble rot. This natural process concentrates the grapes' sugars, acidity and flavours, allowing the production of extraordinarily complex sweet wines.

Sémillon is the principal grape variety, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc. The classic Château Doisy-Daëne Barsac can display aromas and flavours of apricot, peach, citrus peel, pineapple and acacia alongside honey, saffron and subtle spice. Its defining feature is the balance between sweetness and vibrant acidity, producing a wine of considerable richness without sacrificing freshness or mineral definition.

The estate also produces Doisy-Daëne Sec, a highly regarded dry Bordeaux Blanc, as well as the exceptionally rare L'Extravagant de Doisy-Daëne in selected vintages. L'Extravagant is produced in tiny quantities from intensely concentrated botrytised fruit and ranks among the richest and most collectible sweet wines of Bordeaux.

Harvesting for the sweet wines requires multiple selective passes through the vineyard, with individual bunches or berries picked only when noble rot has reached the desired stage. This labour-intensive approach, followed by precise fermentation and maturation, contributes to the remarkable concentration, complexity and longevity for which Château Doisy-Daëne is known.
