CHATEAU CARBONNIEUX
Château Carbonnieux is one of the historic estates of Pessac-Léognan in Bordeaux's Graves region, renowned for producing distinguished red and white Bordeaux wines. Classified as a Cru Classé de Graves, the château has a winemaking history stretching back several centuries and is particularly notable for the quality of both its Cabernet Sauvignon-led reds and Sauvignon Blanc-based whites.
Located south of the city of Bordeaux, Château Carbonnieux occupies an extensive vineyard with the deep gravel soils that give the Graves region its name. These well-drained soils store warmth during the day and encourage deep vine roots, while Bordeaux's maritime climate helps provide a long, moderate growing season. Different vineyard parcels are carefully matched to red and white grape varieties according to their individual soils and exposures.
The estate's red wines are based principally on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, complemented by traditional Bordeaux varieties. They typically show blackcurrant, blackberry and plum alongside cedar, graphite, tobacco and savoury spice. Fine tannins and fresh acidity give the wines structure and allow strong vintages to develop considerable complexity with bottle age.
Château Carbonnieux is equally celebrated for its dry white Bordeaux. Sauvignon Blanc is joined by Sémillon, producing wines that can combine citrus, grapefruit, white peach and floral notes with subtle herbs, mineral character and refined oak. While fresh and expressive when young, the best vintages can develop additional texture, honeyed nuances and complexity through careful cellaring.
Meticulous vineyard management, selective harvesting and parcel-by-parcel vinification allow the estate to preserve the individual character of its fruit. Carefully controlled maturation, including French oak for selected components, adds depth and texture while maintaining the freshness and balance that distinguish both the red and white wines.
For collectors and Bordeaux enthusiasts, Château Carbonnieux offers the opportunity to explore both sides of Pessac-Léognan: structured, Cabernet-driven reds and elegant, age-worthy dry whites. Its long history, Graves classification and consistent focus on both styles have established Carbonnieux as an important reference point for the appellation.
