CESAR MARQUEZ

Viña César Márquez is a small, dynamic wine project based in Spain’s Bierzo region, led by the talented young winemaker César Márquez Pérez. Coming from a deeply rooted winemaking family—he is aiming to express Bierzo’s diverse terroir through site-specific, minimal-intervention wines. His approach draws inspiration from Burgundy, classifying wines according to regional, village, and single-vineyard origins. He works primarily with old vines—many between 80 and 120 years old—planted on a mosaic of soils and altitudes, mostly in and around the village of Valtuille de Abajo.

César Márquez focuses on Mencía for his reds and Godello for his whites. His red wines are typically fermented with partial whole clusters, then aged in neutral oak to maintain clarity and freshness. These wines are known for their purity, elegance, and transparency of site, capturing both the finesse and earthy intensity of Bierzo’s mountainous terrain. The Parajes bottling offers a vibrant introduction to his style, while the Valtuille de Abajo and Sufreiral Vino de Paraje showcase increasingly refined expressions of specific sites. Notably, the 2021 Sufreiral received high acclaim, including 98 points from James Suckling and a place among the top 20 Spanish wines of 2024.

His commitment to low-intervention winemaking and detailed vineyard expression has placed him among the new generation of Spanish winemakers who are redefining quality and identity in traditional regions. His wines, though limited in quantity, are increasingly sought-after.
