CANTINA GIRLAN
Cantina Girlan is one of Alto Adige's most prestigious wineries, producing elegant, terroir-driven wines that showcase the extraordinary diversity of Italy's northernmost wine region. Founded in 1923 by 24 local winegrowers in the historic village of Girlan (Cornaiano), the cooperative has grown into one of South Tyrol's benchmark producers, representing around 200 winegrowing families farming more than 230 hectares across the finest vineyard sites of Oltradige (Überetsch) and Bassa Atesina.
Situated at the foot of the Dolomites, Alto Adige benefits from a unique Alpine-Mediterranean climate. Warm sunny days, cool mountain nights, and a wide range of vineyard elevations create ideal conditions for producing wines with exceptional freshness, aromatic purity, and mineral precision. The region's diverse soils—including volcanic porphyry, limestone, moraine, and clay—allow each grape variety to express its individual character with remarkable clarity.
Cantina Girlan is particularly renowned for Pinot Noir (Pinot Nero), Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, and indigenous varieties such as Schiava (Vernatsch) and Lagrein. The Pinot Noir wines display aromas of red cherry, raspberry, rose petals, forest floor, and spice, supported by silky tannins and elegant structure. The white wines offer layers of citrus, pear, white peach, alpine herbs, and flinty minerality, combining vibrant acidity with exceptional balance and ageing potential.
Among the estate's flagship wines are Trattmann Pinot Noir Riserva, sourced from the famous Mazon vineyards, Vigna Ganger Mazon Pinot Noir Riserva, a single-vineyard wine from the estate's monopole site, and the iconic Fass Nr. 9, one of Alto Adige's classic Schiava wines. These bottlings have helped establish Cantina Girlan as one of Italy's leading specialists in Pinot Noir while preserving the region's historic native varieties.
The winery follows a philosophy centred on sustainable viticulture, close collaboration with its growers, and precise parcel-by-parcel winemaking. Hand harvesting, careful fruit selection, temperature-controlled fermentation, and thoughtful oak maturation where appropriate ensure every wine reflects its vineyard origin while maintaining purity, elegance, and consistency.
Today, Cantina Girlan is recognised as one of Alto Adige's benchmark wineries, consistently earning international acclaim for wines that combine Alpine freshness with Italian elegance. Its portfolio showcases both indigenous and international grape varieties, making the winery one of the region's finest ambassadors on the global stage.
