2024 Byrne Farm 'Single Barrel' Chardonnay
- Description
- Info
The 2024 Byrne Farm ‘Single Barrel’ Chardonnay is a flagship inaugural release from Jeff Byrne, representing nearly two decades of vineyard sourcing and refinement in Orange, NSW. Sourced from Byrne’s favourite parcel within the Balmoral Vineyard at Nashdale — a block of 30-year-old vines perched at 880 metres on the slopes of Mount Canobolas — this wine captures the intensity, purity and mineral drive that define high-altitude Orange Chardonnay. Fermented and matured entirely in a single 2500L French oak foudre, it is a powerful yet highly refined expression of cool-climate Australian Chardonnay. The nose is intensely layered and aromatic, revealing mandarin skin, white peach and grapefruit alongside flinty reduction, crushed rock and citrus blossom. There are complex savoury notes of grilled nuts, nougat, oatmeal and pastry, with subtle oak spice woven seamlessly through the fruit. A saline, almost briny mineral edge adds tension and sophistication, giving the wine remarkable detail and lift.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a beautifully textured yet tightly controlled structure. Rich citrus and stone fruit flavours are supported by creamy lees texture, white tea-like phenolics and vibrant cool-climate acidity that carries the wine effortlessly across the palate. Despite its concentration and power, the wine remains poised and mineral-driven, with the large-format oak contributing depth without heaviness. The finish is long, savoury and exceptionally persistent, highlighting both finesse and ageing potential.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is one of the most exciting new-wave Australian Chardonnays we’ve seen from Orange — combining the energy and minerality of high-altitude fruit with the depth and complexity of serious Burgundian-inspired winemaking. Compared to Byrne Farm’s regular Chardonnay, the Single Barrel offers significantly more concentration, texture and cellar potential while still retaining remarkable freshness and precision. The inaugural 2024 release already feels like a benchmark wine for the region, and it will comfortably reward long-term ageing. Enjoy now with decanting or cellar through 2036+ as it develops further savoury, nutty complexity. Exceptional with lobster, roast poultry, creamy seafood dishes or mature cheeses.
