BURGENLAND
Burgenland is Austria’s largest red wine-producing region and one of Europe’s most exciting wine destinations. Located in the eastern part of Austria along the border with Hungary, Burgenland is renowned for its warm Pannonian climate, diverse terroirs, indigenous grape varieties, and thriving culture of innovation.
The region surrounds Lake Neusiedl (Neusiedlersee), whose moderating influence helps create ideal conditions for viticulture. Warm summers, long autumns, and abundant sunshine allow grapes to achieve full ripeness while maintaining freshness and balance. These conditions have made Burgenland famous for both powerful red wines and exceptional sweet wines.
Burgenland is particularly celebrated for indigenous red grape varieties such as Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, and St. Laurent. Blaufränkisch produces wines with blackberry, dark cherry, violet, spice, and mineral notes, supported by vibrant acidity and structured tannins. Zweigelt offers juicy red and black fruit flavours with approachable character, while St. Laurent delivers elegance, spice, and complexity.
The region is divided into several important subregions, including Leithaberg, Mittelburgenland, Eisenberg, and Neusiedlersee. Each area contributes its own distinctive style, from mineral-driven Blaufränkisch to rich, fruit-forward reds and renowned botrytised sweet wines.
Burgenland has also become a global centre for biodynamic, organic, and natural winemaking. Influential producers such as Pittnauer, Heinrich, Moric, Gut Oggau, Claus Preisinger, and Velich have helped establish the region as one of Europe’s most progressive wine-growing areas.
In addition to red wines, Burgenland is internationally recognised for producing some of the world's finest sweet wines, including Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese, thanks to the unique climatic conditions created by Lake Neusiedl.
Today, Burgenland stands as one of Austria’s most important wine regions, producing wines that combine tradition, innovation, and exceptional terroir expression.
