MOUNT MARY
Mount Mary is one of Australia’s most iconic and respected family-owned wineries, located in the Yarra Valley, Victoria. Established in 1971 by Dr. John Middleton, it was among the pioneering estates that helped revive the Yarra Valley as a premium wine-producing region. From its inception, Mount Mary has been dedicated to crafting wines of elegance, balance, and longevity, drawing inspiration from Old World traditions while maintaining a distinctly Australian identity. The estate’s reputation was built on a philosophy of restraint and purity, prioritizing vineyard expression and timeless style over trends or power.
The vineyard spans approximately 40 acres and is planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Merlot, with smaller portions of Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. The Yarra Valley’s cool climate and gravelly, well-drained soils provide ideal conditions for producing wines of finesse and depth. Mount Mary’s unwavering focus on estate-grown fruit and traditional viticultural practices ensures that each wine reflects the unique character of its site and vintage.
Mount Mary is best known for its four flagship wines, each regarded as a benchmark in Australian fine wine. The Quintet, a Bordeaux-inspired blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot, is renowned for its structure, complexity, and exceptional cellaring potential. The Triolet, a white Bordeaux-style blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle, offers refined texture and subtle aromatics. The Pinot Noir showcases the region’s cool-climate grace with its balance and depth, while the Chardonnay is celebrated for its precision, minerality, and restraint.
Today, the estate is managed by Sam Middleton, John’s grandson and the third generation of the family, who continues to uphold the founding principles of quality, integrity, and patience. Winemaking remains deliberately low-intervention, emphasizing wild yeast fermentation and sensitive oak use to highlight vineyard purity. With its unwavering dedication to craftsmanship and elegance, Mount Mary stands as a symbol of timeless excellence and family legacy in Australian winemaking.
