Château Margaux is one of the world's most prestigious wine estates and a legendary First Growth (Premier Cru Classé) of Bordeaux. Deep gravel provides excellent drainage and encourages vines to establish extensive root systems, creating particularly favourable conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon. Variations of clay, limestone and sand throughout the property contribute further complexity, while the nearby Gironde estuary moderates the growing climate.
Cabernet Sauvignon is the dominant variety in the grand vin, complemented primarily by Merlot, with smaller quantities of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc depending on the vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure, cassis and extraordinary longevity, while Merlot contributes richness and texture. Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc can add floral, spicy and aromatic complexity.
Château Margaux is particularly celebrated for its remarkable perfume and silky texture. Classic vintages can reveal blackcurrant, cassis, blackberry and red berries alongside violet, rose, cedar, graphite, tobacco and delicate spice. The palate combines concentration with exceptionally fine tannins and freshness, producing a wine of great intensity without heaviness.
Meticulous vineyard management, rigorous selection and precise parcel-by-parcel vinification are fundamental to Château Margaux. Only the finest lots are selected for the grand vin before maturation in carefully chosen French oak barrels. This uncompromising approach allows Château Margaux to express both the character of each vintage and the exceptional finesse of its terroir.
The estate also produces Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, a distinguished red wine with its own long history, and the exceptionally rare Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux, produced from Sauvignon Blanc.
