CHATEAU HAUT-BRION

Château Haut-Brion is one of the world's most celebrated wine estates and one of the legendary First Growths of Bordeaux. Located in Pessac-Léognan within the historic Graves region, Haut-Brion holds a unique position in Bordeaux history as the only estate outside the Médoc included among the red wines of the 1855 Classification. Renowned for extraordinary complexity, elegance and longevity, Château Haut-Brion represents one of the highest expressions of fine Bordeaux.

The estate's history stretches back centuries, with Château Haut-Brion achieving an international reputation long before Bordeaux's modern classification systems emerged. Today, the property forms part of Domaine Clarence Dillon, which has been associated with the estate since American financier Clarence Dillon acquired it in 1935. Generations of careful stewardship have preserved Haut-Brion's historic identity while introducing the precision required for contemporary fine-wine production.

Haut-Brion's vineyards are distinguished by deep gravel soils over clay, sand and limestone, providing excellent drainage and encouraging extensive root systems. Located close to the city of Bordeaux, the vineyard possesses a distinctive mesoclimate that, together with its complex soils, contributes to the remarkable consistency and individuality of the wines.

The red Château Haut-Brion is traditionally produced from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with the precise blend varying according to vintage conditions. Unlike many Médoc First Growths, Merlot can play a particularly significant role at Haut-Brion. The resulting wine combines concentration and structure with an unmistakably refined, savoury personality.

Classic Château Haut-Brion can reveal layers of blackcurrant, blackberry, plum and red fruit alongside graphite, cedar, tobacco, earth, leather and warm spice. One of its most distinctive characteristics is the complex smoky, mineral and cigar-box character traditionally associated with the gravel terroirs of Graves. Fine tannins and exceptional balance allow great vintages to evolve gracefully for many decades.

The estate is also renowned for Château Haut-Brion Blanc, one of Bordeaux's rarest and most prestigious dry white wines. Produced from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, it combines citrus and stone fruit with floral, mineral and waxy complexity, remarkable texture and exceptional longevity. Production is extremely limited, making Haut-Brion Blanc particularly coveted among collectors.

Viticulture and winemaking are conducted with extraordinary attention to detail. Individual vineyard parcels are harvested and vinified separately before rigorous blending and maturation in French oak. Haut-Brion also maintains its own cooperage traditions, providing close control over the barrels used to mature its wines.

Château Haut-Brion's combination of historic importance, exceptional terroir and extraordinary ageing potential has secured its position among the greatest wines in the world. For collectors of Bordeaux, it represents an essential benchmark for First Growth Pessac-Léognan and one of the most distinctive expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc on the Left Bank.
