ALMAVIVA
Almaviva is one of Chile's most prestigious wineries and a global benchmark for South American fine wine. Established in 1997 as a landmark joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A. of Château Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux and Chile's renowned Viña Concha y Toro, Almaviva combines French winemaking expertise with the exceptional terroir of the Maipo Valley. Named after the central character in The Marriage of Figaro by Pierre Beaumarchais, the winery symbolises the meeting of European heritage and Chilean viticulture, producing one of the world's most acclaimed Bordeaux-style blends.
The estate is located in Puente Alto, within the Upper Maipo Valley, widely regarded as Chile's finest region for Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards sit at the foothills of the Andes Mountains, where warm sunny days, cool mountain nights, and rocky alluvial soils provide ideal conditions for slow, even ripening. The significant diurnal temperature variation preserves freshness and aromatic complexity, while the gravel-rich soils naturally limit vine vigour, producing fruit with remarkable concentration, structure, and elegance.
Almaviva is best known for its flagship Almaviva Bordeaux blend and the second wine EPU. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the foundation of the blend, complemented by Carmenère, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, with proportions varying according to the vintage. The wines display exceptional depth, offering aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, cassis, cedar, graphite, tobacco, violets, dark chocolate, and spice. Fine-grained tannins, vibrant acidity, and seamless oak integration give Almaviva extraordinary balance and the ability to age gracefully for decades.
Winemaking follows the highest Bordeaux standards, combining meticulous vineyard management with modern precision. Grapes are harvested by hand and sorted carefully before parcel-by-parcel vinification. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks, followed by maturation in new French oak barrels, sourced primarily from Baron Philippe de Rothschild's cooperage. Every decision is guided by the pursuit of elegance, complexity, and faithful expression of the Puente Alto terroir.
Since its inaugural vintage, Almaviva has consistently earned outstanding acclaim from the world's leading critics, including Wine Advocate, James Suckling, Vinous, Wine Spectator, and Decanter, with numerous vintages receiving 98–100 point scores. Widely regarded as Chile's first true luxury wine, Almaviva has become one of the most collectible labels in South America and stands alongside the world's finest Bordeaux-inspired wines.
