BERNHARD OTT

Weingut Bernhard Ott, located in Feuersbrunn in Austria’s Wagram region, is a benchmark estate renowned for producing some of the finest expressions of Grüner Veltliner. The Ott family has been cultivating vines in Feuersbrunn since 1889, and under the leadership of Bernhard Ott, the fourth generation, the domaine has risen to international acclaim. Taking over in 1995, Bernhard transformed the family winery through a combination of innovation, precision, and deep respect for the land, becoming one of Austria’s leading voices for terroir-driven white wines.

Bernhard Ott’s philosophy centers on biodynamic viticulture and minimal intervention winemaking. Certified Demeter biodynamic, the estate emphasizes living soils, balanced ecosystems, and natural vineyard expression. Ott works almost exclusively with Grüner Veltliner, alongside small amounts of Riesling, crafting wines that embody purity, minerality, and vibrancy. His vineyards, spread across around 35 hectares, are planted on the region’s characteristic loess soils, which contribute to the wines’ texture and generosity.

The range includes several site-specific bottlings that each reflect the nuances of Wagram’s terroir. “Am Berg” is a bright, approachable introduction to the house style, while “Fass 4” serves as the estate’s signature cuvée — crisp, balanced, and elegantly peppery. From older vines near the home village, “Feuersbrunn” shows more depth and structure, while top crus like “Spiegel” and “Rosenberg” deliver exceptional complexity, minerality, and ageing potential. Fermentations are carried out with native yeasts, and the wines age on their lees in large Austrian oak casks, with no fining or heavy filtration, resulting in remarkable purity and texture.

Bernhard Ott’s wines are often described as the essence of Grüner Veltliner — crystalline, focused, and texturally refined, balancing power with grace. His dedication to natural farming and precise craftsmanship has earned him the reputation as “the Master of Grüner Veltliner”, and his wines are now considered reference points for the variety worldwide. Whether it’s the accessibility of Fass 4 or the profound depth of Rosenberg, each bottle from Weingut Bernhard Ott reflects a deep harmony between nature, vineyard, and winemaker.
