The 2022 Benjamin et David Duclaux Côte-Rôtie Maison Rouge is sourced from the famed Maison Rouge lieu-dit in the southern sector of Côte-Rôtie, where old Syrah vines grow on steep gneiss and granite-rich slopes. Produced from 100% Syrah and aged for 20 months in French oak, this is one of the domaine’s most powerful and age-worthy wines. While the Duclaux brothers are renowned for their elegance and restraint, Maison Rouge adds an extra layer of depth and concentration without sacrificing finesse.
The nose reveals blackberry, cassis and dark plum layered with violet, liquorice, graphite and smoky spice. Rich and beautifully structured, the palate combines dense dark fruit with velvety tannins, vibrant freshness and a long mineral finish. Jeb Dunnuck awarded the wine 96 points, while Robert Parker and Wine Spectator both scored it 94 points, praising its purity, balance and outstanding ageing potential.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A superb Côte-Rôtie that beautifully balances power and elegance. Complex, layered and built for the cellar, it pairs wonderfully with roast lamb, venison, beef fillet, game birds and truffle dishes. While impressive with a long decant today, it will reward patience and should evolve gracefully through 2045 and beyond.
