The 2020 Benjamin et David Duclaux Côte-Rôtie Coteaux de Tupin is the flagship wine of this highly regarded family estate in the southern sector of Côte-Rôtie. Sourced from a selection of the domaine’s finest terraces in the Côteaux de Tupin lieu-dit, the wine is made from old-vine Syrah planted on steep gneiss and schist slopes. Fermented largely with whole bunches and matured for almost two years in oak, it represents a more concentrated and powerful expression than the estate’s traditional cuvées.
The nose is deep and complex, revealing blackberry, blueberry and dark cherry alongside violet, graphite, smoked meat and spice. The palate is rich yet remarkably refined, with silky tannins, vibrant acidity and layers of dark fruit framed by mineral tension. Matt Walls awarded the wine 96 points, praising its balance, texture and longevity, while Jeb Dunnuck rated it 93–96 points, highlighting its concentration, purity and structure.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A serious Côte-Rôtie that combines the power of great Northern Rhône Syrah with exceptional elegance and finesse. Complex, layered and built for ageing, it pairs beautifully with roast lamb, venison, beef fillet, truffle dishes and game birds. While impressive with extended decanting today, it is best from 2027 onwards and should evolve magnificently through 2045–2050.
