Your First Real Burgundy Should Come From a Family Like This

How La Gibryotte opens the door to the cult Dugat house — without the cult price.

Most people's first red Burgundy is a thin supermarket bottle, and it teaches the wrong lesson — that Pinot Noir is pale, sharp and forgettable. The fix is not to spend a fortune. It is to start with a wine made by people who could not make a careless one.

The Dugats of Gevrey-Chambertin are that kind of family. Their domaine wines are cult bottles — tiny production, allocated years ahead, four-figure prices on the secondary market. La Gibryotte is their négociant label: fruit sourced around their home village, raised by the same hands in the same centuries-old cellar their grand crus have always known.

If you have been curious about Burgundy but never known where to begin, this is the door. Two wines, two steps.

A négociant label from a great domaine is the closest thing Burgundy has to an open door.

Who the Dugats Are

Domaine Claude Dugat sits in the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin, the largest and one of the most celebrated red-wine villages of the Côte de Nuits. The family has farmed here for three generations, working a tiny holding of around six hectares — much of it premier and grand cru, including parcels of Charmes-Chambertin and the famously minuscule Griotte-Chambertin. Farming is organic, yields are kept low, and, as the domaine's own importers put it, quantity is always the limitation.

The wines spend their first winter in the Cellier des Dîmes — a 13th-century tithe cellar, built on Roman foundations, where the village once stored the harvest dues it owed the church. It is one of the oldest working cellars in Gevrey, and it gives Dugat's wines their first, formative months of rest.

Claude built this estate into one of Burgundy's most sought-after names, defined by perfume, silk and precision rather than weight. The next generation, Bertrand and Laetitia, now works alongside him.

Why the Négociant Label Is the Smart Way In

In Burgundy, a domaine wine is made only from the estate's own vines. For a house like Dugat, those vines are few and the demand is enormous, so the domaine bottles are allocated and expensive before they are even released.

A négociant label works differently. The family buys grapes and must from trusted growers around Gevrey, then vinifies and ages everything themselves, in their own cellar, to their own standard. La Gibryotte is exactly that — the Dugats' own hands and cellar, applied to a wider net of fruit.

The result is the house signature — red-fruited, floral, silky, alive with freshness — at a fraction of the domaine price. It is the bottle to learn on.
