The Wachau is Austria’s most famous and prestigious wine region, celebrated worldwide for producing exceptional Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. Located along a picturesque stretch of the Danube River between Melk and Krems, the Wachau is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's great wine-growing regions.
The region is characterised by dramatic terraced vineyards carved into steep hillsides overlooking the Danube. These ancient stone terraces, combined with a unique combination of continental and alpine climatic influences, create ideal conditions for producing wines of remarkable purity, complexity, and longevity.Wachau’s diverse soils, including primary rock, gneiss, granite, and loess, contribute to the individuality of its wines. The region is particularly renowned for Grüner Veltliner, which displays aromas of green apple, citrus, white pepper, stone fruit, and mineral notes, and Riesling, known for its lime, white peach, apricot, floral aromatics, and vibrant acidity. Both varieties produce wines with exceptional ageing potential and strong terroir expression.
The Wachau has developed its own distinctive classification system, administered by Vinea Wachau. Wines are classified as Steinfeder, Federspiel, or Smaragd, with Smaragd representing the richest and most age-worthy expressions from the region’s finest vineyard sites.
The region is home to some of Austria’s most acclaimed producers, including FX Pichler, Prager, Knoll, Hirtzberger, Alzinger, Rudi Pichler, and Emmerich Knoll. These wineries have helped establish the Wachau as a benchmark for dry white wines and a global reference point for Riesling and Grüner Veltliner.
