The 2019 Clos Saint-Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Combe des Fous Rouge is a concentrated Southern Rhône blend led by old-vine Grenache, with Syrah, Vaccarèse and Cinsault. The Grenache includes vines planted in 1905, bringing depth and character to aromas of blackberry and cassis with lavender, pepper, Provençal herbs and floral notes.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and richly layered, with ripe dark fruit, fine tannins and savoury spice balanced by freshness and mineral detail. Grenache is matured in tank, while the other varieties see oak, helping retain fruit purity while building structure and complexity.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is an excellent choice for collectors who enjoy powerful, age-worthy Châteauneuf-du-Pape with old-vine depth and Rhône character. Drinking well now with decanting, with considerable potential for further cellaring. Ideal with roast lamb, slow-cooked beef, venison or herb-roasted meats.
